The COVESA All Member Meeting (AMM), held at the end of September in Novi, Michigan, brought together leaders and innovators from the automotive industry to dive into the theme, “Exploring the Business and Technical Challenges of the Connected Vehicle.” This two-day event showcased presentations, panels, and workshops that highlighted the opportunities, advancements, and challenges in the connected vehicle ecosystem, including topics like Software-Defined Vehicles (SDV), in-vehicle commerce, connected vehicle safety, and vehicle data integration. Attendees had the opportunity to dive deep into both business and technical discussions with insights from industry experts.

We’ve highlighted three sessions from the event that demonstrate the breadth of topics covered at our COVESA events. Access these and other AMM presentations on our Wiki.

  1. Key Updates from the Data Expert Group

Stephen Lawrence of Renesas, Adnan Bekan of BMW Group, and Erik Jägervall of Bosch shared recent advancements in COVESA’s Data Expert Group. Key updates included the upcoming release of Vehicle Signal Specification (VSS) 5.0 with refactored tooling and a new user interface, along with SAMM and Vspec ApiGear exporters. They highlighted the Open1722 project as a new COVESA project, providing code to use the IEEE1722 Ethernet L2 transport protocol.  The COVESA Central Data Service Playground (CDSP) has seen traction with the release of CDSP v0.1.0, new time series processing functions, and enhanced compatibility with Grafana. Christian Muehlbauer (BMW) joins as a new maintainer, and collaboration with the broader community continues.

  1. Collaboration through Interoperability

Magnus Feuer of Volvo Cars tackled the growing need for interoperability in the automotive industry, focusing on how Software-Defined Vehicle (SDV) concepts can help bridge gaps between different software engineering cultures within OEMs. Feuer built on themes from his previous COVESA Spring AMM presentation that highlighted core engineering principles of trust and empathy. His session emphasized strategy – the processes, plans, and tools to complete a project and the critical role of collaboration in driving progress, thus enabling faster execution, scalable designs, and better products.

  1. AOSP App Framework Standardization

This session provided a status update on the AOSP App Framework Standardization group, focusing on what had been accomplished since the last AMM, sharing success stories and ongoing work streams, and the goals for the future. The presenters stressed how standardizing app frameworks for connected vehicles is essential to ensuring compatibility and functionality across different platforms.
