Why did you join COVESA, and how long has your company been a member?

We joined out of necessity and stayed for the community, coming up on our 1st anniversary. Cox Automotive’s mission is transforming how the world buys, sells, owns, and uses vehicles, and delivering on that meant integrating vehicle data from more sources than we could count: OEMs, TSPs, scan tools — all speaking different languages. So we went looking for a standard, and found VSS (Vehicle Signal Specification), COVESA’s flagship standard for the industry. We’ve since built it into the core of our enterprise data infrastructure — using it to capture, standardize, and put vehicle data to work across products that serve fleets, dealers, and consumers alike.

What benefits does your participation in COVESA bring to your company and business? 

The best part is the collaboration. This ecosystem tackles problems no single company solves alone — the kind that, if the industry doesn’t solve them collectively, never get solved. Connected vehicles are here to stay, and we want to be at the center of where the people building this space come together.

Which COVESA collaborative project(s) or Birds of a Feather (BoF) is your company engaged in, and why is that beneficial to your business?

We’re doubling down on our investment in Cox Fleet, so the Commercial and Fleet Vehicle Expert Group is exactly where we want to be. Cox Fleet exists to help operators manage the full lifecycle of their vehicles — from acquisition through maintenance to remarketing — and that only works when the data underneath it is consistent, trustworthy, and actionable. This group is where the industry comes together to make that possible. The benefit is direct: this is where the standards that Cox Fleet depends on actually get shaped. Fragmented data, misaligned formats, the cost of integrating dozens of sources that all behave differently — these get defined and solved in rooms like this one, not in isolation. So we’re not showing up to observe; we’re engaging to help set how vehicle data gets created and shared across the ecosystem, because when that gets easier for everyone, it gets better for the fleets we serve.
