What does your company do? What services or products do you provide?
The TRATON Group is one of the world’s leading commercial vehicle manufacturers, bringing together four strong brands: Scania, MAN, International, and Volkswagen Truck & Bus. Together, they offer trucks, buses, and transportation solutions for customers and markets around the world.
As a Group, TRATON combines the strengths and expertise of its brands while creating common foundations where collaboration adds value. This applies not only to vehicle technologies but increasingly to software, digital services, and connected vehicle ecosystems. By developing and sharing technologies across the Group with our joint Group Research & Development (R&D) and working with external partners and open technology communities, TRATON aims to accelerate innovation while allowing its brands to continue differentiating through solutions tailored to their customers.
Ultimately, TRATON aims to reinvent transportation, with its products and services and as a partner to its customers. The focus is on making transportation more efficient and intelligent and on helping shape the technological transformation of the commercial vehicle industry.
Why did you join COVESA, and how long has your company been a member?
TRATON joined COVESA to collaborate with the wider automotive and technology ecosystem on the foundations of software-defined vehicles. As software becomes increasingly important for commercial vehicles, we believe that greater collaboration on common technologies, standards, and interfaces can benefit the industry as a whole.
COVESA provides an open environment where vehicle manufacturers, technology companies, suppliers, and other industry partners can exchange knowledge, contribute expertise, and work together on shared challenges. For TRATON, it is also an opportunity to bring the perspective and requirements of the commercial vehicle and transport industry into these discussions.
By contributing to an open ecosystem, we want to help advance interoperable solutions that can be built upon across the industry, while focusing our own development efforts on the areas where we can create distinctive value for our customers. TRATON joined COVESA in September 2026.
What benefits does your participation in COVESA bring to your company and business?
With our work on TRATON ONE OS, we are bringing together modular building blocks from our own development, partnerships, and open-source solutions – such as COVESA.
The opportunity for TRATON is clear: collaborate on non-differentiating building blocks while continuing to compete and innovate where it matters most. Rather than solving common technological challenges independently, open collaboration allows the industry to build on shared foundations, improve interoperability, and make better use of development resources. For TRATON, this means we can focus more of our engineering efforts on creating distinctive solutions and tangible value for our customers.
Participation in COVESA also gives us the opportunity to exchange knowledge with vehicle manufacturers, suppliers, and technology companies and to contribute the specific requirements of commercial vehicles to the development of common approaches. This is particularly relevant as vehicles become increasingly connected and integrated into broader digital ecosystems spanning fleet operations, logistics, infrastructure, and digital services.
Ultimately, we see open collaboration as an important enabler for software-defined vehicles. By connecting the transport and logistics world more closely with the global technology ecosystem, we can build on proven solutions, reduce unnecessary duplication, and accelerate innovation across our industry.
Which COVESA collaborative project(s) or Birds of a Feather (BoF) is your company engaged in, and why is that beneficial to your business?
TRATON is currently participating in the Commercial and Fleet Vehicles, Vehicle Signal Specification (VSS), and Vehicle Information Service Specification (VISS) expert groups.
COVESA’s work on standardized interfaces can help reduce integration complexity and improve interoperability between different SDV components. This is particularly relevant for commercial vehicles, which are part of a broader digital ecosystem spanning vehicles, fleet operations, logistics systems, infrastructure, and digital services.
We believe that widely used vehicle APIs should be based on open approaches. Participating in COVESA allows us not only to benefit from common specifications, but also to contribute the requirements and perspective of commercial vehicles to their further development. In this way, our involvement in COVESA supports our broader ambition to strengthen the software ecosystem around TRATON ONE OS through open technologies and strategic partnerships.
