The COVESA Automotive AOSP App Framework Standardization Expert Group has announced the completion of the UnifiedPush project. The goal of this project was to create an open-source Push Notification service that meets automotive requirements that any OEM, tier 1, or supplier can run and maintain. The goal was met!

Push notifications, also known as server push notifications, are short, immediate messages sent by a server to a device or devices to deliver updates, alerts, or reminders.

They are crucial for connected cars because they enable real-time communication to the vehicle from external services. This allows for delivering important updates, alerts, or reminders, which can enhance user experience, safety, and maintenance. For example, a traffic or weather alert, meeting reminder, service reminder, or incoming VoIP call.

Until this release of UnifiedPush, there was no agreed-upon, open-source implementation of push notifications in the Automotive Android Open Source Project (AOSP) in the industry that met the requirements for connected vehicle applications.

The COVESA Automotive AOSP Application Framework Standardization Group defined the requirements and analyzed the available notification projects to determine which would be the best fit. After a couple of workshops, UnifiedPush was identified as the best fit, and the project scope and requirements were created detailing:

It is now available in the UnifiedPush and COVESA code repositories with the COVESA AOSP SDK being the best place to start.

We encourage you to get involved! For those who use push notifications in their products, COVESA encourages you to consider adopting the UnifiedPush code. You can find out more about this code and other upcoming code projects by:
